INFERTILITY LINKS

Novarel (hCG)

Novarel is a prescription medication containing human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG), a hormone used primarily for fertility treatments. It is commonly prescribed to both men and women for different reproductive health issues.

Uses of Novarel

  • In Women: Used to trigger ovulation in those undergoing fertility treatments such as IVF or IUI. It mimics luteinizing hormone (LH), which is essential for egg release.

  • In Men: Used to stimulate testosterone production and sperm production in conditions like hypogonadism (low testosterone) or delayed puberty.

  • In Boys: Helps treat cryptorchidism (undescended testicles).

Dosage & Administration

  • Typically administered as an intramuscular (IM) injection.

  • Dosage and schedule depend on the condition being treated.

  • Often used in combination with other fertility medications.

Side Effects

  • Pain or swelling at the injection site

  • Headache, irritability, or mood swings

  • Breast tenderness (in both men and women)

  • Risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS) in women, which can be serious

  • Increased risk of multiple births (twins, triplets, etc.)

Precautions

  • Should not be used if pregnant

  • Caution in patients with hormone-sensitive cancers or certain medical conditions

  • Regular monitoring is required during treatment

1. Ovulation Induction

  • Primary use in fertility treatments

  • Stimulates the release of a mature egg from the ovary (ovulation)

  • Often used alongside other fertility drugs like Clomid or Letrozole

2. Support During Assisted Reproductive Techniques (ART)

  • Used in IUI (intrauterine insemination) or IVF (in vitro fertilization)

  • Helps time the egg release precisely for egg retrieval or insemination

3. Luteal Phase Support

  • Sometimes used to support the luteal phase (second half of menstrual cycle)

  • Helps maintain progesterone levels after ovulation

4. Diagnosis of Pituitary Function

  • Rarely, hCG can be used in diagnostic tests to assess pituitary gland or ovarian function

5. Treatment of Certain Gynecological Conditions

  • Occasionally used in secondary amenorrhea (when a woman stops having periods) due to hormonal imbalance

Novarel (hCG) for Women – What It’s Used For

Novarel (hCG) for Men – What It’s Used For

1. Boosting Testosterone Production:

* hCG mimics luteinizing hormone (LH), which stimulates the testicles to produce testosterone.

* Often used alongside or after testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to preserve natural testosterone production or prevent testicular shrinkage.

2. Treating Hypogonadism:

* For men whose testes aren’t producing enough testosterone, Novarel can help jump-start endogenous production.

3. Improving Fertility:

* It can stimulate sperm production in men with low sperm counts due to hormonal imbalances.

4. Post-Cycle Therapy (PCT) in Bodybuilding (off-label):

* Some bodybuilders use hCG to help restore natural hormone levels after a steroid cycle, though this is not an FDA-approved use.
