INFERTILITY LINKS

Menopur (Menotropins)

Menopur is a fertility medication that is primarily used to address fertility issues in both women and men. It contains follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). It is commonly used in assisted reproductive treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or intrauterine insemination (IUI), to stimulate the ovaries and promote the development of multiple follicles.

How Menopur Works:

  • FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): Stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles (which contain eggs).

  • LH (Luteinizing Hormone): Supports follicular development and helps trigger ovulation.

Uses in Women:

  • Stimulates the ovaries in women undergoing fertility treatments.

  • Helps in controlled ovarian stimulation for egg retrieval in IVF.

  • Can be used in hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (a condition with low levels of FSH and LH).

How It’s Administered

  • Given as a subcutaneous (under-the-skin) or intramuscular injection.

  • The dosage and duration depend on individual response and treatment protocols.

  • Used in combination with other medications like Gonal-F (FSH) or hCG (human chorionic gonadotropin).

Common Side Effects

  • Injection site reactions (pain, redness, swelling)

  • Bloating and abdominal discomfort

  • Headaches

  • Nausea

  • Increased risk of ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS)

Precautions

  • Should be used under the supervision of a fertility specialist.

  • There's a risk of multiple pregnancies.

  • Not recommended for individuals with primary ovarian failure.

Success Rates:

Menopur has been shown to improve ovarian response, but success depends on age, ovarian reserve, and overall fertility health.

Uses in Men:

In men, Menopur is utilized to treat infertility associated with low sperm count (oligospermia) or hypogonadotropic hypogonadism, conditions where the body produces insufficient sex hormones. By supplementing FSH and LH, Menopur can stimulate the testes to produce sperm, thereby potentially improving fertility. This treatment is often combined with human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) to enhance its effectiveness. Clinical studies have demonstrated that gonadotropin therapy, including treatments like Menopur, is effective in inducing testicular growth, spermatogenesis, and fertility in men with gonadotropin deficiencies.

It's important to note that while Menopur is FDA-approved for use in women, its use in men is considered off-label in some regions. Therefore, men considering Menopur for fertility treatment should consult with a healthcare provider to discuss potential benefits, risks, and alternative therapies.

Both Menopur and Repronex are injectable gonadotropin medications used in fertility treatments. They contain human menopausal gonadotropins (hMG), which include follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing hormone (LH). These hormones stimulate the ovaries to produce eggs, making them essential for assisted reproductive technologies like IVF (in vitro fertilization).

Which One is Better?

  • Menopur is typically preferred due to its higher purity and lower risk of injection site reactions.

  • Repronex was effective but had more impurities, leading to more side effects, and has been discontinued in the U.S.
