INFERTILITY LINKS

hMG

Human menopausal gonadotropins (hMG) are injectable fertility medications used to stimulate ovulation in women undergoing fertility treatments, such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) or ovulation induction. hMG is derived from the urine of postmenopausal women and contains two key hormones:

  1. Follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) – stimulates the growth and development of ovarian follicles.

  2. Luteinizing hormone (LH) – supports ovulation and corpus luteum function.

Uses of hMG:

  • Treating infertility in women who do not ovulate naturally.

  • Stimulating multiple follicle development in assisted reproductive technologies (ART) like IVF.

  • Sometimes used in men to stimulate sperm production in cases of hypogonadotropic hypogonadism.

Common hMG Medications:

  • Menopur

  • Repronex

  • Humegon (less commonly used now)

Administration and Side Effects:

  • Given via injection, usually subcutaneous or intramuscular.

  • Possible side effects: ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), multiple pregnancies, bloating, headaches, and mood swings.
