INFERTILITY LINKS

Cabergoline is a dopamine agonist primarily used to treat disorders related to high prolactin levels, such as prolactinomas (prolactin-secreting tumors) and hyperprolactinemia (a condition where the body produces excess prolactin). It works by stimulating dopamine receptors in the brain, which suppresses prolactin production from the pituitary gland. High prolactin levels can cause infertility in both women and men by disrupting ovulation, menstrual cycles, and sperm production.

Uses of Cabergoline:

  • Hyperprolactinemia: Treats high prolactin levels, which can cause irregular menstrual cycles, infertility, and unwanted lactation.

  • Prolactinomas: Shrinks prolactin-secreting tumors in the pituitary gland.

  • Parkinson’s Disease (off-label use): Sometimes used due to its dopamine agonist effects.

  • Restless Legs Syndrome (off-label use): Occasionally prescribed for this condition.

Cabergoline and Female Infertility

  • Restores Ovulation: High prolactin inhibits gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), disrupting ovulation. Cabergoline lowers prolactin, allowing ovulation to resume.

  • Regulates Menstrual Cycles: Many women with irregular or absent periods due to hyperprolactinemia see improvements.

  • Improves Fertility in PCOS: Some women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and high prolactin may benefit.

Cabergoline and Male Infertility

  • Boosts Testosterone: High prolactin suppresses testosterone production, leading to low libido and poor sperm quality.

  • Improves Sperm Count & Motility: By lowering prolactin, cabergoline may enhance sperm production.

Dosage and Treatment Duration

  • Usually taken twice weekly at 0.25–1 mg, adjusted based on prolactin levels.

  • Fertility improvement can occur within a few months.

Pregnancy Considerations

  • Once pregnancy occurs, cabergoline is usually stopped unless otherwise advised by a doctor.

  • Studies suggest no major birth defects associated with its use, but monitoring is recommended.

Side Effects:

  • Nausea, dizziness, headache

  • Fatigue, low blood pressure (hypotension)

  • Hallucinations (rare)

  • Heart valve issues (rare but serious)

Warnings & Precautions:

  • Heart valve disorders: Long-term use has been linked to fibrosis of heart valves.

  • Pregnancy & breastfeeding: Generally not recommended unless necessary.

  • Psychiatric effects: May cause impulse control issues (e.g., gambling, compulsive behaviors).
