Bromocriptine

Bromocriptine is a dopamine agonist commonly used to treat infertility caused by hyperprolactinemia (high prolactin levels). Elevated prolactin can disrupt ovulation, menstrual cycles, and fertility in both women and men.

How Bromocriptine Helps with Infertility

  1. Lowers Prolactin Levels – High prolactin suppresses the secretion of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), leading to irregular or absent ovulation. Bromocriptine, a dopamine agonist, reduces prolactin levels, restoring normal ovulation.

  2. Restores Menstrual Cycles – In women with irregular or absent periods due to high prolactin, bromocriptine can help regulate menstrual cycles, improving chances of conception.

  3. Treats Pituitary Tumors – If a prolactinoma (a benign tumor of the pituitary gland) is causing excess prolactin, bromocriptine can shrink the tumor and restore fertility.

  4. Improves Male Fertility – In men, elevated prolactin can cause low testosterone and reduced sperm production. Bromocriptine may help restore normal hormone balance and improve fertility.

Dosage & Treatment Duration

  • Usually started at a low dose (e.g., 1.25-2.5 mg daily) and gradually increased.

  • Can be taken orally or vaginally (to reduce nausea side effects).

  • Treatment continues until pregnancy is achieved or as long as needed to maintain ovulation.

Possible Side Effects

  • Nausea, dizziness, headaches (can be minimized by taking it with food or before bedtime).

  • Low blood pressure (leading to dizziness upon standing).

  • Fatigue and mood changes in some users.
